On the Occasion of My Daughter’s Wedding

A week ago, my only daughter got married. I have a son as well, but I’m afraid he’s not close to that landmark yet.  I love them both more than my words can express, but now is the time for Lindsey.

Of course, she is her own person and not merely a reflection of me. But somehow, this milestone is a marker in time—for all of us.

Is she still, will she ever be again, my little girl? The one who crawled into my bed, displacing her father, after television shows I never thought would be scary and somehow, they were. The one who saw God’s footprints in the mud when a human must have slid and left behind the evidence. The one who feared monsters in the closet and my husband donated a hockey player pillow to watch over her in the night.

Are we adding a new son or losing a layer of closeness?   After God, one’s husband comes second so he will hear things and know things about her that we will never know—that should be between them. If her parents’ marriage is any indication, she will spend more time with him in this life than us.

I have never seen her happier. And I couldn’t be happier for her.

But I still see the little girl “making movies” with her Barbie dolls with the next-door neighbor. I still see the precious child who went to diabetes camp as a healthy child with a friend diagnosed in fifth grade—a friend she met when they were five and who stood by her side as she said her vows.

That little girl is now designing sets and scouting locations for real movies. She is making her dreams come true.

And I am more than happy to cheer her joy from the sidelines, throw flower petals at the two of them, and cover them in prayer.

May the Lord bless them, and keep them, and shine His face upon them, and give them peace.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

But as for me, I will trust in the Lord. Knowing, in the scheme of eternity, I will never lose my girl, but instead, He will bring more blessings than I could ever know or even imagine, including a new son.

Congratulations, Kevin and Lindsey!

Congratulations, Christina! Your daughter is beautiful! Blessings to you as you begin another phase of your life as the mother of a married daughter. You've gained a son! My daughter isn't married, so I haven't faced the same situation as you, but I have two married sons. Married sons are definitely a different prospect than a married daughter, but I chose to think that I'd gained two more daughters rather than I was losing two sons. All that being said, I believe there's some truth to this old adage: "Your son is your son 'til he gets him a wife, but your daughter's your daughter for all of her life."
