A Christmas Message
My favorite Christmas memories are wrapped around family and friends and Jesus.
Nothing about Christmas makes sense without Jesus.
I remember as a little girl lying on the floor of our tiny living room with my sisters staring at the blinking lights on the tree. The beauty seemed magical.
I remember one Christmas when I really wanted a watch and didn’t get it, only to have my father reach up into the crevice leading to the attic and pull it down—somehow, the tiny package had missed being wrapped.
I remember my son’s first Christmas when I saw the magic and wonder through

his eyes. I was happily married with a healthy child, and I’d just finished my Ph.D.—all was right in the world for a time.
Then, there are the other glimpses of heaven. When I was in college, I served as the Religious Life Association President and attended every Christmas function they offered. Attending chapel, listening to the choir, absorbed by candlelight, I felt the presence of God.
He gives us so much beauty if we take the time to be in his Word, to worship. I know I love giving presents—and getting them. I love baking—y’all know that’s true, but I also need to step back and take time to remember the reason behind the season.
We’re not absolutely sure of the exact date He was born historically, but experts place his birth around Christmas, and I am quite willing to accept that date as one of the most important dates in history.
Nothing is more important than eternity. Think of eternity as one leaf on a tree, in a forest, of so many trees we can’t see the end. If you are sick, if you are struggling, if you face chronic pain, think of that hardship as a grain of sand.
Christ came to give us an eternity of joy, pain-free, pain won’t even be a distant memory…so, let’s celebrate! Jesus loves you, so sing the hymns, shine those lights, give those gifts which can’t even touch the biggest, bestest gift of all—salvation!
Merry Christmas to all, and Happy Eternity!
